The State Theatre was formally opened on December 14, 1956 in Cross Roads, St Andrew. The £10,000 building, with a seating capacity of 1,200, was described by then Chief Minister Norman Manley as a "dream come true". The State Theatre was closed between 1999 and 2001.

Chief Photographer Norman Grindley has searched the archives of The Gleaner to visit these vintage places.
