The Hunts Bay Jewish Cemetery, Jamaica
de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception
In another
book by Marilyn Delvante...... The Hunts
Bay Jewish Cemetery is the one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the
Western Hemisphere and the oldest in Jamaica.
There is a tombstone
that dates as far as 1672. The Jews of Port Royal established this
cemetery across the Kingston Harbour at Hunts Bay, before the city of
Kingston was laid out. The 1692 earthquake destroyed 2/3 of Port Royal
taking the synagogue, and the street known as Jew Street. Burials
continued throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries there.
