At first glance, the pages of these old books are gilt-painted, inset, but look more closely and you will see beautiful hidden paintings (main picture). Known as 'disappearing fore-edge paintings', because they disappear when you close the book, their very existence has lain a secret to many since the practice began more than 350 years ago.
