Harriet E. Wilson

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

On this day in 1859, pioneering novelist Harriet E. Wilson became the first African-American novelist to publish a book, "Our Nig: Sketches From The Life Of A Free Black," which was based on her life as indentured servant in the North.

When Wilson initially released the book, she was panned by Whites in the North who didn't like the fact that Wilson described the region as barely a step up from slavery in the South. Consequently, Wilson was never really acknowledged for her work during her time.

Harvard's Dr. Henry L. Gates would end up bringing the Wilson's book to the fore in more recent years, celebrating the deep significance of her work.
