Appeal for mourners to attend funeral of RAF veteran, 90, who flew in one of the most daring raids of the Second World War but died alone after losing his wife 18 months ago

Sidney Marshall (left and right), who died aged 90 at his home in Lytham St Annes, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for shooting down German fighters over Bergan. He also piloted a Lancaster bomber and flew in the sortie that destroyed Nazi battleship Tirpitz (inset). But he is facing a funeral with no mourners, as he had no children and his wife died 18 months ago.
