The foundation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp raises money to maintain the site exactly as it was when the Nazis retreated before the Soviet Army arrived in January 1945 to liberate the camp, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day. Their guiding philosophy: “To preserve authenticity.” The idea is to keep the place intact, a harrowing and heartbreaking task performed out of a sense of responsibility.
