On Dec. 3, 1794, a Portuguese slave ship left Mozambique, on the east coast of Africa for a 7,000-mile voyage to plantations in Maranhão, Brazil but strong winds caused the ship to come apart on two reefs not far from Cape Town. Recently the remnants of the vessel, the São José, were discovered.
