Timeline: 1450-1750
1469-There is a marriage between Prince Ferdinand ( of Aragon and king of Sicily) and princess Isabella of Castile
1474- Isabella officially becomes queen of Castile
1478- the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church- hold of orthodox beliefs
1479-Prince Ferdinand becomes official king of Aragon
1480- Jews were targeted and so were the Islamic beliefs. Isabella and Ferdinand begin to drive the Muslims from Granada.
1492- the Muslims are defeated. People (Jews) who did not adapt to Christian beliefs were driven out of the country. This is the year when Ferdinand and Isabella sent Christopher Columbus on a voyage to the Americas. He landed on the Caribbean.
1494-the treaty of Tortesillas between Spain and Portugal. Agreed on a line that divided the “New World” between these two countries.
1495- Spanish forces invade Naples
1504- Ferdinand became the king of Naples. Death of Queen Isabella.
1505-1509-Philip I and Juana are rulers of Castile, the capture of Oran.
1512- Ferdinand captures kingdom of Navarre; all of Spain is under his rule.
1516-Ferdinand dies. Charles of Burgundy becomes king of Castile. The lands of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg are under the Spanish Empire.
1519-Charles V becomes “Holy Roman” emperor. Cortez lands in Mexico.
1521-Hernan Cortez conquers the Aztecs of Mexico. The ban of Lutheran books, beliefs.
1532- Francisco Pizarro conquers the Inca Atahualpa- South America
1550- Spain is now ruler of Mexico, Central America, West Indies, Southwestern United States, and Western South America.
1555-1556- resignation of Charles V and Philip II is now the king of Spain.
1560- The Netherlands go against Spanish rule, decrees of the council of Trent.
1580- Spain invades and Conquers Portugal.
1588- King Philip sends the Spanish Armada to go against the English fleet; yet they were defeated.
1590- Spain conquers the Philippians and has disturbances in Saragossa.
1598- Philip II dies and Philip III becomes king.
1609- Truce between Spain and Dutch; expulsions of Muslims
1618-1648- the outbreak of the Thirty Years War; great finance.
- · 1621- Philip III dies. Philip IV is now the king.
- · 1635- France goes into war with Spain
- · 1640- rebellion of Catalonia and Portugal
- · 1648- Peace at Westphalia, Pyrenees, Velazquez, and independence
1700- Death of Charles II. Phillip V becomes king
1702- Beginning of War of Spanish Succession
1714-War of Spanish Succession ends; Spain looses all European Territory. Aragon, Valencia, and Catalonia looses self government
