Since the early 20th century, women have meddled with their eyebrows. Whether by waxing, threading, tweezing, pencils or pens, women mold their brows to current fashion trends. Here are the last 100 years of eyebrow trends!
1920s
1920s socialite Clara Bow plucked her brows ’til they were pencil thin, then drew them pointing slightly downwards for a permanently sad look.
1930s
Eyebrows became somewhat clown-like in the 1930s. Marlene Dietrich would shave hers and redraw the line higher than her normal brow, giving her a permanently shocked look.
1950s
Marilyn’s era brought back the look of the natural eyebrow with pencils to define them but largely stayed true to their natural shape.
Audrey Hepburn had one of the biggest brows of the 1950s.
1960s
Mia Farrow embodied 60s chic with brows plucked ’til they were elegantly thin then emphasised with a pencil.
Mary Quaint went for the thin, strong brow line.1970s
In the 1970s women rid themselves of eyebrow pencils and returned to their natural look, but models like Twiggy faced a hard road back to full brows before they were plucked during the 60s.
