Ernest Hemingway's racy letter to Marlene Dietrich

de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception

A personal and rather racy letter Ernest Hemingway wrote to actress Marlene Dietrich in 1955 is expected to fetch $50,000 at an upcoming auction.

The author met Dietrich aboard a French ocean liner in 1934, and while they never consummated their relationship, the pair wrote romantically to each other for nearly three decades.

In this two-page letter, which Dietrich's grandchildren are selling as part of a larger auction this month, Hemingway,  who was married to Pauline Pfeiffer at the time, refers to the screen siren as 'Dearest Kraut' and signs off: 'I love you as always'.
