Skilled at mathematics he developed an early interest in illegitimate business, his brother became a rabbi. The Black Sox Scandal, his attempt to fix the 1919 World Series haunted him despite a lack of evidence to prosecute. A gambler by trade he diversified into bootlegging and narcotics with the futurity of prohibition. The luminaries of his organization - Meyer Lansky, Jack "Legs" Diamond, Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Dutch Schultz.
He was killed in November 1928. Former associates Frank Erickson, Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel and others inherited his enterprises. His death contributed to the fall of Tammany Hall and rise of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.
