Was famously kidnapped by an Italian gang for five months at 16 in 1973.

The initial ransom of $17 million was refused by his miserly grandfather who agreed to pay $2.9 million only after his grandson's severed ear was sent by kidnappers - Getty lll was charged the cost of his ransom at 4% interest to repay his family.  The trauma and rejection created a chasm and his life spiraled into drug abuse and familial estrangement.  He was disinherited after marrying an older woman at 24, the union produced a son, Balthazar, who created his own Hollywood scandal when he temporarily abandoned his wife and children for a public affair with the actress Sienna Miller.

A cocaine and heroin abuser, Getty lll suffered a stroke at 25 after overdosing on a mix of methadone, alcohol and valium but his father refused to pay his crippling hospital bills declaring them a consequence of his son's own drug addled life style. 

The stroke left JP in ill health, partially blind and paralysed - now 53, he is teetering on the brink of death and expected to die within days.
