The first hairdryer may have been invented in 1890 by French hairdresser, Alexander F. Godefoy who created the device for use in his salon.

Inspired by the vacuum cleaner, Godefy's device was not popular, its large bulk scared customers off, it was simply a vacuum cleaner with a hose attached.

If this image is authentic, it explains why women of that era resorted to bell-shaped cloche hats to conceal the results of a bulky hairdrying device. Those extreme blasts of wind would have provided no styling qualities.
