Behind the locked doors of an abandoned asylum: Dilapidated hospitals that were home to a 'community' of 2,000 mentally ill patients over 50 years ago and are still waiting to be demolished
The 300-acre site of Severalls Hospital built in May 1913 to house some
2,000 patients and closed in 1997, was designed so that no one would
ever need to leave. Inside the now deserted, decaying shell,
psychiatrists were once free to test new treatments on patients that
would today be considered inhumane - such as frontal lobotomy and
electro-convulsive therapy.
