"Millions of women are being told when to get pregnant based on statistics from a time before electricity, antibiotics, or fertility treatment."
Deep anxiety about the ability to have children later in life plagues many women. But the decline in fertility over the course of a woman’s 30s has been oversold. Here’s what the statistics really tell us—and what they don’t.

Ruth Roman

Portrayed in newspaper profiles as outspoken and tough, actress Ruth Roman entertained few illusions about the movie business. In a 1949 interview, she told Hedda Hopper: "I love everything about show business, even the junk. You can't change the junk. People have tried. So you might as well accept it along with the good. Acting is my life. The profession can break my heart. In fact, it already has several times. But I love it."
Born Dec. 22, 1922 in Boston, Mass. Died Sept. 9, 1999 in Laguna Beach, Calif.

St Paul’s in the Blitz

‘War’s greatest picture’ ...
The iconic photograph of St Paul’s Cathedral in the Blitz was taken almost 75 years ago by Herbert Mason - 29 December 1940.
Cultural historian Dr Tom Allbeson’s research on the famous photograph has been published in the UK and USA.
‘To a British audience, the building was … a visual token of nothing short of civilisation itself' - Dr Allbeson explains that the image created emotional bonds with people. St Paul’s was ‘perfectly suited to being a significant wartime symbol’ as -
*A place of worship, whose destruction would be sacrilege
*A symbol of London as the capital of the British Empire
*An emblem of the Great Fire of 1666 - from which it had arisen as a phoenix

Twenty eight bombs fell on St Paul’s on 29 December 1940, and Herbert Mason took three photographs The Daily Mail published the image – cropped and edited, with visible brush strokes for fire. The original negative for Herbert Mason’s photograph has been lost.
While Britain saw the photograph as a symbol of civilisation and defiance, German media portrayed it as showing destruction.
Swansea University academic Dr Allbeson is compiling a book on photography and European cities from 1945-1961. He notes that images can be just as influential as people, ideas or institutions:
‘Photography has infiltrated every aspect of human experience’ and so contemporary history cannot be properly explained without considering photography. Press photos convey ideas, attitudes and values to large audiences.'

"Columbia" is the correct spelling for the sportswear company. The Columbia River that runs through Washington State & Oregon is one of the largest rivers in America, its massive Grand Coulee Dam generates electricity.
'Columbia' is also the classical female figure that represents the spirit of the US just as 'Britannia' represents Britain. Columbia is depicted in artworks, sculptures, statues etc.

Lucien Chen
de bene esse: literally, of well-being, morally acceptable but subject to future validation or exception
Integral to the development of Jamaica’s boxing history including the heavyweight title fight between George Foreman and Joe Frazier at the National Arena in Jamaica in1973.
The Jamaican Chen was well known in boxing circles all over the world.
He brought some of the biggest names in boxing to Jamaica - Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Beecham, and Simon Brown, at his invitation. He worked with local boxing stars including Bunny Grant, Percy Hayles and Richard Clarke and well known world champions Michael McCallum and Trevor Berbick.
He was associated with Berbick in the negotiations for his world title fight with Mike Tyson, which earned Berbick his biggest pay-day of US$2-million.
Although he was not the promoter for the Sunshine Showdown between George Foreman and Joe Frazier, he played an important role in getting the bout to take place in Jamaica 1973, and was part of the group that put the card together.
His ring savvy and knowledge of boxing enabled him to be the most successful promoter to have graced these shores, and he will go down in history as the man who introduced Dinner/Boxing to Jamaica. Frustrated that he would hold massive shows in the National Stadium, National Arena and at Sabina Park and lose money at the gate, he took boxing to the controlled area of a hotel ballroom.
He arranged an attractive televised boxing card preceded by cocktails and dinner for which all tickets were sold in advance. He garnered attractive sponsorship packages that ensured the event would make money. On many occasions, proceeds were donated to charities. On at least two occasions, he donated the proceeds of his shows to needy boxers.
His House of Chen Restaurant on Knutsford Boulevard was a showpiece, and was well patronised by sports people where he entertained many overseas boxers before and after their fights.
Horse Racing & Other Interests:
-------------------------- ---------------
Boxing was not his only love, however, as he was an avid fan of horse racing and owned several horses. He was also a skilled bridge player and, at one time, was the head of Track Price Plus, a leading local book-making company. Chen also had a passion for horseracing in which he was an owner and breeder.
Before boxing, he was very successful in the insurance business, after which he moved into bookmaking when it became legal. He owned local bookmaking company Track Price Plus and this was an area in which he was very innovative. Chen was the former owner of Track Price Plus, the country’s largest bookmaking firm, along with Melvin Chin.
